Pinnacle system works well, but getting the format from 8mm movie camera tape is the tough part, I think. I don't know of any "home devices" for that, though I suppose there are. I remember back in the early days of VHS camcorders, someone had some kind of a device then for making 8mm (which are from the late '50s, early '60s, right?) into VHS. It had a projector that projected the 8mm into a little box & the VHS camcorder would record that show in the box. I think the idea was to remove ambient lighting.

I'm not sure how else it would be done. Hopefully Iowa Mark will report back if he finds a "home method".
