Kingston,Mi
Michigan requires a hydrant to be isolated from potable water or not be a "stop and waste" hydrant.
Whats the difference? About $800.00 and a poor hydrant, the hydrants that do not stop and waste to the soil have a pressure tank and a waste line to the surface. Each cycle of the hydrant on and off forces the wasted water to the surface where it is lost. So the well drillers around here carry a $800. hydrant with them so when the landowner wants one put in on the new well they can show it to them and then put it back in the truck as a no sale. Then the landowner goes to TSC and gets the chinese junk and installs it himself.

After modifing hydrants to meet the requirements of the Michigan Department of Enviorment Well Protection division, we found that if in Michigan we isolate the nonpotable uses with a reduced pressure anti-backflow prevention device ( that is the term used) at $300.00, we had a better situation all the way around and could use a standard stop and waste hydrant again.

We have always used Woodfords on this farm, have had 2 in the nearly 60 years I have been here, the current 1 was installed in 1975. It weeps around the packing nut, but not enough to worry about.

I haven't installed the reduce pressure anti-backflow prevention device or RPZ yet either.
