More than likely, you'll be able to feed anything you want to them if its topped with syrup. We do the same, stalks, ground hay (some lower quality stuff), and maybe some straw mixed with syrup and they eat up every bit of it, keeps them good through winter. Usually thow a little corn in with it as well.
