My personal experience is that the square tapered single spear goes into a heavy, dense bale much more easily than the two round spears. I can get the front loader spear into a bale even on ice without pushing it around.
I can tell you don't bale your own hay. It's no problem with 2 spears either. Many a times when baling hay here you drop the bale on a side hill right next to the fence. All you have to do is barely put the spears in, tilt the bale and loader so you are basically pushing the spears straight towards the ground.
I won't charge you for this tip but maybe the next. :-)
