North Texas | Trying to the cows (Maine Anjou and Simmentals) to produce the most milk possible for their babies. This year I will be culling for milking ability and want to make sure I am giving them all they need. I will be only feeding 10 mommas so this is not a huge deal. These are retired show cattle and trying to raise own show calves but in the past we are weaning light and too far behind.
Live in central Texas so weather should not be an issue for days and days.
Plan on the following: 5 lbs whole cotton seed/day per animal , free choice grass hay (14% protein) in hay rings, and maybe so wheat grazing, very short but may have some grazing now and free loose mineral. Plan on crimp feeding the calves also. Do not have access to corn by products, but could get some corn screenings/cracked corn from feed mill if needed. My $/# feed feeding could be higher than most but it is 10 and the calves are used for a different purpose so willing to pay a little extra, to help the mommas. Any ideas welcome.
