A cheap 30-06 would be light years more accurate than an old military rifle. Unless you find an old off set scope mount, a gunsmith will have to recontour the bolt to clear the scope which costs more than the price of the rifle. The surplus ammo will not be good for accurate shooting.
One other thing to remember, those old war horses kick like a Missouri mule. The straight back stock and steel butt plate will beat you to death. I have a Mauser k98 in 30-06 that I bought just for the action and 4 rounds through it convinced me that it is going to be rebarrelled and bedded into a custom stock before I shoot it again.
Check out Marlins new line of bolt guns. Pretty good units for around $300.00.
