Subject: Unintended flambe' for Christmas dinner

Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa

I've made a baked Brie for a few get-togethers lately that uses brown sugar, dried cherries, chopped walnuts and brandy.  Fixed one for our Christmas gathering last nite as part of the appetizers.  Everything going along normal......  350* over for half an hour, we're good.  Opened up the oven to take out the Brie and that darn thing flashed the vaporized brandy in the oven and popped a lovely fire-ball out the door.  Singed off my eyelashes, eyebrows, and about the first 1/2" of my hairline.  Didn't hurt anything else, and I'm fine, but scared my husband and mom (the only ones here at that time) half to death.  My poor hairdresser is gonna have a challenge to trim up the damages to look half-way reasonable, but the best I can do is be thankful that it was me opening the oven, and not my mom, who uses a significant amount of hairspray on her hair.  She'd have been bald.....and maybe worse!!
