| Trend Mico has a free tool called CWShredder. If you are running any anti-malware programs that try to protect your registry against changes, you should disable them before running this. You should also clear the System Restore files.
If CWS tells you it removed something, close the program and then re-run it, in order to make sure the infection did not re-install itself. You can also try running this program in Safe Mode.
Sometimes, if an infection is especially bad, the best course is to just bite the bullet, write all zeroes to the hard drive, format and reinstall your software. If it has been more than a year or so since you last installed Windows, you will note that everything seems much peppier with a fresh install. Or, switch to an Apple computer- no viruses, spyware or registry to worry about, plus OS 10.4 "Tiger" is a much more polished and elegant operating system than any version of Windows. The least expensive road into Apple involves the Mac Mini. You will need to use your present display; if your keyboard and mouse are USB, you can use them as well (if they aren't, a USB keyboard and mouse don't cost all that much these days- you can sometimes even find them in thrift shops for a few dollars). From time to time, places like Fry's Electronics even bundle a keyboard and mouse along with the Mini.
