I have two and they work great. The most important items if you would purchase/install one are:

1. Make sure to get enough below ground sections to match your geographic region and don't try to be cheap and save a few dollars. You need that surface area in the pit to allow heat to work its way up to the bottom of the waterer.

2. Make sure that you keep water out of the pit. A little in the bottom foot or so is OK.....but don't put it in a low spot that is notorious for being wet. As the water level in the pit gets higher, the unit looses its ability to obtain heat from the ground.

3. Install it with the correct amount of waterer exposed from the ground (I believe he recommends a drinking height of 20"). This means making sure whatever you put around the waterer (rock, fabric, etc.) that the cattle don't track it away on their feet or waller it in the ground. To be the happiest with it's performance you should either keep adding rock as it disappears or use concrete depending what works best for you.

4. Try to locate them, if possible, where there will be some protection from the wind. It will really help keep it open longer day in and day out.
