southern MN | One of the better investments I've made on the farm in Minnesota, um, 8-9 years ago?
I'd want some concrete around it, I installed mine on the outside of the fence up against the feeding platform, with a hole for the cattle to put their head through.
Best buy.
If you let the water level get high, it will freeze over easier. Number of critters drinking will affect if it freezes over or not. Windchill has a bigger effect on mine than raw temp, it's done well at 20-25 below; but a stiff wind of 40mph will freeze it over at minus 5.
In any case, it only freezes a film over the top, one needs to check a waterer once a day anyhow, easy enough to knock the film loose and good to go for another day.
It was 3 degrees for a high today, stayed open on it's own. Minus 18 on the wall now, so 50-50 if I'll need to break a little bit of ice in the morning.
I got the small one with a big ball gravity feed valve.
Nice folks to deal with too.
