| Right now if you've been buying corn "hand to mouth" and selling hogs on the open market you're taking a beating, losing $20+/hd.
If you were to buy weaned pigs (12-15 lbs) soon you'd be able to hedge them on the June board. If you bought open market pigs I'd suspect they'd cost $50+/pig and you'd maybe be looking at a $10 bill profit/pig.
That is if the pigs cost $50, they'll likely cost $60 or more since that's about where the breakeven purchase price is.
Buying open market pigs now days is kinda like buying cattle, bid up to you're breakeven and then throw in a couple more $ if you actually want to buy them.
Sad to say but unless you are a person that really likes taking a lot of risk you're probably better off custom feeding at the time if you can keep the buildings full. Pigs just cost too dang much right now for what the corn/hog markets are and remember pigs can and do die. | |
