They sold 162 lb fat lambs last Tuesday in Aberdeen, SD for $155 cwt. That's $251 a lamb! I've said for a couple years that sheep were the best money in farming. But remember, they are WORK. And best sheep operations are run by women, including ours. I know we are not planning on expanding. We are at 160 ewes and that's were it stops. I don't see this lamb price doing anything but going up. No big expansions and the new guys that get in don't want to work at it, don't have a good set up, and everything falls apart. I've seen it happen quite often. Only changes we are making for next year is getting our fat lambs bigger. No more selling at 130 lbs. Market wants 145-155 lbs, so we might as well feed a couple more weeks and get those extra dollars.
Only thing that could cause a big price decline is imports and with our weak dollar, it seems to help us keep the Ausies out of here.
