NW Iowa
If I wasn't waiting to hold back bulls I'd do it when they are 650-7 weights about to wean, those nuts are like a natural growth hormone IMO, let them keep them till fall. Not too many around here including the Vets trust those little green bands, sometimes you'll get a screwed up one that will pull one back up in & they'll kinda grow into the side, its a mess to cut out when they get like this.

Green tag them, cut their nuts out & a tetanus shot. Throw them back with the cows for 2 or 3 weeks to reduce stress then wean them, with the cows on the other side of the fence if you can. It works great, the cows seem to be the only one worried they're apart. Calves will stop balling in 3 days normally. I always have calves started on feed like silage/hay in the pasture before I'll green tag, if they're used to being up eating all the time it helps alot with stress of green tagging/weaning. My cows/calves in this program seem not to loose much gain. The Vets will agree this is a good program.
