Northeast Indiana (Auburn) | I can see how you can find an unmarked or forgotten cemetery. My grandfather, then my father then I farmed an 80 acre farm for 90 years and never knew a cemetery was on the place. When the land was sold six years ago the new owner found it when he was bulldozing a thick Thornapple grove. He saw an odd looking stone, took a look and saw some numbers on it. The last person to be buried there was in 1865. 92 graves were found after removing brush by hand. County records showed the cemetery did exist but nobody knew about it. The new land owner cleaned up the site and spent a lot of time setting the markers back upright and keeps it mowed. There is no public access to the site and no records show any. It is in the middle of a 640 acre block of land. Until we know all of the facts and trust me the news reporter will not mention this story in a follow up, don't judge the farmer. |
