I think there will be some real advantages in the future to being able to sell source and age verified cattle. Someone who is willing to get a USDA 840 series premises number and put their name/ID on a calf (button/tag says "unlawful to remove") should be willing to guarantee and prove that the calf is as represented: weaned and vaccinated and have the vet records to prove it if someone asks.
I'm experimenting with RFID tags with the first set being applied this weekend. Double rfid button plus tag on retained cattle, single rfid combo tag on steers/heifers being processed in coming season.
I want to see how the system works. I am hoping that there will be at least some buyers willing to pay a small premium for calves that they know where they came from, who raised them and that they were weaned/vaccinated. How is this system working in Canada for calves? Is it used for preconditioning ID as well as source/age? Jim at Dawn
