Subject: Re: Retired Hog operation story

Columbia City, Indiana
I remember when I was a kid and Dad worked 2nd shift, I had to do evening chores by myself. About 30 sows and 2 boars got (I think) 5 buckets of shelled corn topdressed with 1 bucket of sow cubes, on the ground. They cleaned it up in a matter of minutes. We farrowed in huts in the pasture. Weaning time was my favorite, because it was a blast. We would move to feeding the sows on the ground right up against the hog panels that divided the sow pasture from the market hog lot. By this time the pigs were 5+ weeks old and eating grain off the ground right along with mama. Dad and I would go around and catch pigs by their hind feet and put them over the hog panel into the finishing lot. I remember once trying to catch a little spotted booger for several nights. He was the last one, and he was smart. I finally got him, though.
