| Well... define "widely". :-) There is still plenty of rBST being used in this country. In places where there is competition for milk (think Wisconsin) the producers have more leeway. In places where you have just one co-op that will send a truck for your milk (Kansas, Nebraska) the choice is pretty much gone. Yes, it does boil down to the word of the producer. And the level of penalty for non-comp-liance written into the affidavit.
You are correct that milk from supplemented cows is identical in every way to milk from unsupplemented cows, even organic milk.
The milk market in Idaho has recently gone the other way as the perceived demand for cheese from non-supplemented cows has not materialized. | |
