That is a good reason for direct deposit. Things get lost in the mail all the time. For a long time, I was the same as you about people having access to my account. I found out that if you write a check to a company and the company makes a mistake about the amount. The company can come back into your account to get the rest. Might as well get the money without worrying about the post office. IMO
