The Fighting Illini and the chief never had a chance. There are no members of the Illini tribe left to support the name and the chief symbol. Get to be the Illini claiming a person from Illinois is an Illini. Kind of like being a Hoosier. So they get to keep the name but... no more chief. Blago had loaded the trustees with liberals who wanted to get rid of the chief. NCAA finished the job.

And we were talking NCAA. Fisher Bunnies is a High School.
Have you ever read the book Mascots Have Tales? It tried to explain where several of the nicknames came for Schools in Illinois.
