NE IOWA/ SE SD | Thank you djm for the comment, I try to be straight forward and as honest as I can be.
4speed, with everything there is a margin of error. I have said many times, it does not matter what kind of yield calculating formula you use all will have mistakes. For all kernal counting methods, there are going to be hybrids that are overstated and some that will be understated. The reason the ProFarmer numbers generally work is because they take 1,000+ nation wide. Taking that many samples everything tends to average out.
Where I can debate the ProFarmer number (I am not questioning their number, but simply debating) is they compared analog year 2004&2005 for Iowa. In those two year Iowa's Profarmer numbers came in 9 bu. under USDA state final yield. I hate to harp on this too much, but test weights can make or break a yield. In 2005, my farm had a very high test weight (58-60) vs. this year where I expect 54-56. So, that increase in yield can roughly add 6% to final yield....or 9-10 bu.
