Dairy may be struggling in that area, but fat cattle and hog prices are pretty high right now. Try to find a cheap feeder calf, they are very expensive. I went to Albany yesterday, but didn't think the crops look that great, maybe better than average for that area on the sandy spots. Lots of yellow corn and even the corn on the sandy areas was looking worse than it did a month ago. Those areas that typically irrigate didn't need to pump as much water this year though. Ag technology(both seed genetics and machinery) has made it possible to grow corn in areas that previously grew wheat. Without the ethanol plants it wouldn't be economical to grow more corn in the upper midwest, the infrastructure to haul it to outside markets couldn't handle it which would force prices below cost of production.
