Swift Current, Sask | Agreed Redman. Usually the feed barley market is slipping as we get close to harvest, but cash prices have been strengthening in the past 3 weeks. $3 delivered to Swift, up from $2.80, which is where it sat since last fall. There used to be a good chunk of malt barley grown in our area, not any more. When guys have to carry malt barley for 10-12 months till the elevators take it, it doesn't sit well with the farmers who want bin space/cash flow, plus the germination needed for malt is usually shot by then. We are one of the few that still grow barley. Always grown feed, and if it wasn't for storage, we would be all barley for cereals. Looks like a bumper crop too, can't wait to get into it. | |
