its amazing sometimes what stupid things cows can get themselves into.....its like you have to toddler proof your farm....and you still probably wouldn't cover all the bases.....so don't beat yourself up....last week we had a bad deal like this too....housing a bout 10 show ayshires for some girls east of us....had one in the dry cow pen due to calve in a couple days....there is a 8 inch gap between the gate and post along the drive by feed in the front....had caught holsteins picking their heads up and over the gate and down between it and the post to get to the heifer baleage laying in the trough in the next pen but figured ayshire was too short....came up in the morning and apparently not only had she got her head between post and gate but somebody else musta decided to play queen and give her a shove.....went out under the neck rail on her back and hit the tiled manger and there she lay in the morning....dead as a doornail....sawed the chain loose on the gate to get her out.....made the VERY uncomfortable phone call to the owners......luckily their comeback was "sh$t happens".....
