Subject: Winter watering?

nw mb
Anyone have any better ideas for my winter watering setup? I dont have the ability (money) to put in automatic heated waterers so basically I drag out 150ft of hose from the shop, hook up to a hydrant and fill up a galvanized stock trough. I have a insulated plywood box that around/under the trough and half of the top is covered, to keep it from freezing I use a sinking heater.

This worked well for a while last winter but then the ground around trough got all punched out and creates a problem for the smaller cows as they cant reach the trough when its full let along have a drink when its half full. Im thinking maybe Ill have to bury half the box and pour a bit of concrete around the edge.
