To clear up your breeding question, the super baldy calves you are talking about would be an F2 cross. First cross (F1) is the purebred (Shorthorn) x purebred (Herf) mating. Your second cross would be known as an F2, the (HerfxShort) x (Angus) mating.

If I remember what I learned of heterosis, it's generally maximized at the F2 cross with additional very small gains after that cross.
