It only took me 40 yrs. to learn what you want to know

I know. I am so impatient. :) Thanks for he reply.

A trip to the coffee shop might be one time that some good would come of coffee shop talk

Funny you should mention that. I have breakfast occasionally with the gentleman that owns the local elevator. He says he does sell contracts....he searches the market and buys contracts based on what he needs t cover the wheat he takes in.

P.S. Is there any other crop you could plant and give the ground a 2 yr, rotation, before going back in and plant the wheat and hay???

Why do you ask I wonder? I suppose that would be the best choice wouldn't it? Corn would eliminate the take all risk and it would take advantage of the free nitrogen in the soil. Trouble is, there is a question about whether or not he ground will grow corn (I've never seen it attempted in over 35 years) and we could really us the straw.

Don't expect big returns
Just hire most of it done and chalk it up to expense against the hay crop,

I'm thinking if we break even on the wheat, then we make a profit on the straw.......we are currently paying other farmers $40 - $60/ton in the windrow.

Just curious. How do you grow quality hay without a sprayer???

That's part of the reason for wanting to re-seed back into hay. After the alfalfa plays out, the weeds come in.
