North Country Cheviots are the larger breed of cheviot. Ewe's weigh in about 150+ lbs. Had them for quite a few years.

Border cheviots (sometimes just called cheviots) are the small ones.

Good side of cheviots: Independent, tough(if stuck on side will often be alive when others are dead), lambs are up and perky. Take care of themselves. Good cross with suffolk ram as said above because the straight NCC are slower maturing. Lambing percentage in the 140-150's. Very seasonal breeder. Dorset and polypay are less so. Wool can be in the 26 micron range if you get the right line, otherwise will be coarser like dorsets.

Bad side: don't flock too well. usually want to take a mile walk to far side of pasture 1st thing in morning to see if any new holes are present in fence. Fast, Smart. You learn to lean down when catching them and then stand up quick, as they will be trying to go over your shoulder. Builds your reflexes.

They treated us well, but we started grazing irrigated bluegrass seed fields using 3 wire turbopolywire and m1500 gallagher charger in the fall. We wanted more flocking and less escaping, so have bred/bought more polypays. If you have good fences, the NCC are good sheep.
