I have my cows, calves heifers and bull on some pretty heavy red clover right now. I put out some of last year's hay in a ring near the water trough and I have been amazed at how much hay they are consuming even with the heavy lush clover nearby. Maybe the hay is helping them somehow. They also have salt and a couple Mineralyx barrels nearby. No sign of bloat and they seem to be doing well as they enter a critical period with big calves really putting a load on the cows. With alfalfa I would highly recommend having some hay available, especially at first until they get used to it. They are also consuming large amounts of water right now. I was reading where a lactating cow with a spring calf will typically drink 30-35 gallons of water a day this time of year.
