Mississippi
The idea of the telephone company setting up DSL service has probably been the main reason we haven't seen more broadband over electrical lines, for that matter.

The technology is there, plus you've got a wide stand of copper. A friend in Florida said that was the basic reason his electrical cooperative gave him for not pushing into it.

The same market forces hit small, rural internet service providers kind of the same way that wireless operators are now getting whacked. These companies set up wired internet connections for small, farflung towns because the big ISPs required long distance phone calls for dialup service. Later, the big phone companies got into the internet ISP business and made most dialup calls toll-free.

We publish crop and pest reports in the South and California, with most of our reports going out by email. It became a battle for a while for my circulation manager to keep up with the bounces and changed email addresses because of the high mortality rate among small, rural ISP operators. Some are still around and doing okay, I guess, but we still find a certain amount of migration.
