Its just in the blood i think. I mean if you ever spend any time around livestock it gets in your blood. My dad raised stockers and we worked hard taking care of them. I never felt any attatchment to them i guess because they weren't mine, you know? We had ended up with a bull and a couple of heifers that we allowed to breed and when that first calf hit the ground i was hooked. After dad passed away i started saving back some heifers and buying a couple of bred cows here and there and started building a real cow herd. To me seeing a new calf crop and watching them grow is one of the most rewarding feelings i can think of.
