X military you might try the golf courses on the bases. Upscale one is NW along I 10 towards Boerne. There is a lot of retired military #2 behind San Diego. Might call ahead for reservations & not wait till the last minute.

The riverwalk is a fixed leg of the San Antonio river. It's below street level so traffic is on the bridges above. They bored a huge tunnel from the Northside under downtown to the southside to reduce flooding. Along with the Alamo across the street, very safe for tourists day & nite. I've seen shovels, bobcat & a street sweeper in there during cleanout & concrete repair, about 4' deep in the middle. City water mostly comes from the Edwards underground aquifer N & W of the city. SA river is notorious for being dust bowl dry to raging floods.

Nobody has said it yet but find yourself a BBQ shop & sit down to a plate of brisket, ribs, sausage, etc...
