Find someone locally who is the "expert" and talk to them. Seems like there is usually someone around that specializes in the "high tech" stuff and can get you started. just beware someone who justs wants to sell you stuff. make sure what you are buying actually has benefit to your operation.
sounds to me like you want something to play around with. i recommend the Garmin Etrex line of GPS recievers. they are econmical, easy to use, compact. BUT they arent soimething you are going to be plugging into other equipment down the raod to do things like varriable rate fertilize, autosteer etc etc, but they are cheap enough that it doesnt really matter that it might not work with fuiture purchases
