Subject: RE: RTK Radios

Are you starting from scratch or does the network already exist? If the network exists you will have to go with the frequency already decided on. If starting from scratch you can pick from low uhf, high uhf, vhf, or 900mHz. Pacific Crest radio-modems are compatible with Trimble when you get one in the same frequency range. Some of the other top brands purposely make their equipment to be compatible also so they can sell into the mining industry. You probably won't save much money choosing a brand other than Trimble though .

If you look inside a Trimble Trimmark radio prior to model 3 you will find a standard Motorola radio. It is the specialized modem that translates the gps data into a radio signal that adds the dollars. The 900 mHz has become popular because no license is required and the spread spectrum signal eliminated most interference.
With uhf or vhf even though you have obtained an exclusive frequency you will probably experience interference problems from stray signals. On voice someone walking on you can be an irritant, but in gps it can really mess things up
