Thanks for your questions. You are correct, there would not be much need for it there. It is geared towards your average soil sampler that samples in the 4"-12" sampling depth.

There is a by-pass pressure setting so that rocks or other hard material will not damage the machine. If it goes into the ground and hits something rock hard it will only try to push through so hard until the oil is redirected to elimiate damage, and the probe is reversed out of the ground. If it hits the rock at a bad angle, you do always risk bending a probe.

If you determine that you do not want the core, you just have to hold the collection box open with your foot, and it will push the core out onto the ground instead of in the holding container. The probe is designed to quit spinning with the opening of the probe facing the operator, which gives you a clear view of the core before it is deposited in the containter.
