Margin in a Deere SeedStar system is measured by how hard the gauge wheels push up on the stops. This value is in pounds, not psi.

When active pneumatic downforce is turned on (check box is checked), you are setting the amount of margin / how hard the gauge wheels push up on the stops. The system will vary the amount of the air in the air bags automatically to attempt to achieve the programmed amount of margin. Many find this system to be too slow to react.

When active pneumatic downforce is turned off ( no check in box), the system runs like every other pneumatic planter (commonly called set point mode). The value you type in is pounds of downforce the airbags push downwards. You may still hear the system adjust, but it's only to reach the desired pounds of downforce. Margin will still read out on the display, but will vary since you are in set point mode
