SW Ohio | Honestly around here I've had way better luck with a coil tine harrow than a spike drag harrow, for exactly the reasons you describe. Never really had any luck with keeping the residue flowing through a spike harrow. I also pull a rolling basket or brillion packer depending on what I'm doing.
Are you maybe getting some weeds that are causing the bunches to start and then the cornstalks just add to the problem? You might try raising your harrow one chain link at at time and see if it helps to have a little less down pressure, or maybe let the pull chain out to lay the teeth back a little and let trash flow better.
I went from a tiger mate to a 726 finisher, both on 7" spacing, both with coil tine harrows. Honestly don't notice a whole lot of difference, but I think I need to replace my disc blades as they are getting worn. It will go through chick weed up to a point, where the tiger mate couldn't even get close to chick weed without plugging | |
