There is a release(foot) down inside that that presses the inside to the inside of the well casing. Normally there is a SS cable up top that you pull.There is a large O ring that seals the surface. SOme of those units contained a screw actuated foot mechanism the did the same thing. Outside of the casing has a large U bolt the seals it to the casing. The units were cast iron and the
O ring WILL NOT reseal as it is hard a a rock and actually might fall out IF you get it to release. They were a horrid design. The brass slide adats were a huge improvement. Get the backhoe and dig it out. Cut the casing below the pitless with out cutting thru the p[ipe. (been there done that) You probably have a 4" well. It is very possible the pump may be stuck in there anyway.
