SW OH
A little more detail to my method. I've had gauges for a long time. I use them mainly for the connection from tank to machine. I have a fitting to hook shop air to the system and use soapy water to find leaks. I also have a vacuum pump for water removal and just bought a recovery machine so I don't waste any of that expensive freon. I just don't pay attention to the gauges to get the correct amount of freon. I've found many manufacturers labeled amount to be to much. To much freon will not cool any better than to little. To much oil can be a problem as well. Every system is different and the sweet spot can be different even in like machines. The gauges help identify problems like a plugged orifice tube or bad expansion valve. If you can afford a set, get them. As others have said, it's not rocket science. The theory of operation is pretty simple.
