RR Valley, ND; MN native | I always think about how in the 19th century and earlier, loosing a child was so common from epidemics that went through the community.
One g-grandpa and his 1st wife had 9 children. All but 2 died and his wife died shortly after the 9th. Then, one of the 2 that survived later died of TB in their 20s. I had heard he always wore dark colors or black the rest of his days. He remarried and had another 13 of which I descended from #4.
