North Carolina | We use small grain covers in certain fields for winter erosion control. They are usually terminated in the vegetative stage to prevent drying out the soil and tying up too much nitrogen ahead of no till corn.
At the time of burndown they are usually very pale, having used up all of the left over nitrogen in the soil. When the corn hits about V4 there is no trace of the covers to be seen in the field.
Is there any ROI to adding some N to the covers in February? If so, the goal would be to green up the cover and return that nitrogen to the corn during the growing season without loosing it. Maybe a hair brained thought, just thinking. | |
