I would head from KC to Colorado Springs. There is Garden of the Gods, the U.S. Air Force Academy, and Pikes Peak. In Monterey, be sure to visit the Monterey Aquarium and Cannery Row. Carmel is not far from there and really beautiful. Gilroy is North of there and is the garlic capital of the U.S. Yosemite and Lake Tahoe are worth a visit.
