Next batch, give the tetanus shot 2-3 weeks ahead of banding and boost at banding.
My farm is hot for tetanus. Lost a calf knife cut by vet to tetanus. Now, I give CD&T at birth to fight over eating disease and help immune system recognize tetanus. Then simply give tetanus toxoid booster at castration. Has worked fine so far but if I have trouble, I will add a pre-castration vac like advice above.
