Earlville, NY | When we built new years ago, there was big push for wider deeper more open stalls, lots of lunge room etc. Well, our cows were used to old barn with poor lunge room, I think many of them saw the new stalls as a challenge to see if they could crawl through the head to head without getting stuck. We had lots of animals, mostly heifers crawl through, stand up and be stuck between the neck rails. Or bash their vertebrae, or fly out other side and split or hurt stifle. Really frustrating. I wouldn't use boards, if they do go too far forward it's harder to pull them back. Something round is better. We have no brisket stops in our barn now. I think the stupidest ones culled themselves or figured it out, never have trouble now.
We also have loops in half the barn now that are suspended, there's some framework in front that discourage forward movement but leaves plenty of lunge area. I'd need a picture if you really wanted to see. | |
