Subject: RE: Late summer or spring seeded alfalfa

Scottville, 49454 Northwest Michigan

We always thought an early August seeding after wheat harvest was the most profitable way to address our alfalfa seedings.

Get a full crop the seeding year with the wheat.  An opportunity to load up the root zone with nutrients prior to the alfalfa seeding.  (Potassium and phosphorus don't move much in the soil.  Thus, our desire to get a heathy dose of those nutrients in the root zone before planting the alfalfa.)   Early August isn't as busy of a season for us to plant alfalfa, as compared to spring alfalfa seedings.  Plus, we typically got a decent percentage of full alfalfa production the next year.  Worked well for us.
