The Internet
I'm sat in a hotel in Strasbourg, we were in Amsterdam for a few days before, having travelled here on a very fast electric train.

Very few cars in the centre of Amsterdam and the few that are there are generally electric. People mostly cycle everywhere. Yes, it's a relatively compact city, but the air is noticeably cleaner than one might expect in a city and it's so quiet without (mostly) diesel engines. According to a tour guide, cars are very expensive to park in Amsterdam, but most people don't need on day today because they can cycle to most places in the city in 12 minutes. Another benefit is there are very few fat people, people look fit and healthy.

Strasbourg has fewer bikes, but they are still a significant mode of transport
