East of Broken Bow | The old square body GM pickups could have a Dodge drive train dropped in pretty easy (all things considered). Change motor mounts and fiddle with a few things, and it could almost look factory. The old 12 valve engines didn't need much for a wiring harness, even less of one if it had a manual.
Does it have the Gertrag or the New Process transmission? Those were the two most common manuals that would bolt right up behind the Cummins. If it is a Gertrag, do NOT pull a heavy load in 5th gear, the torque of the engine will overwhelm the overdrive. You can pull in 5th, just do not work the engine very hard, and don't let it lug way down. High torque and low RPM in 5th will cause problems with the 5th gear, but there are better than new repairs for it. It involves a fully splined 5th gear shaft and gear, along with a few minor parts. | |
