Buhl, ID | Interesting you mention Jerseys because here we're milking about 500 Holsteins, about 40 crossbreed and 5 Jerseys. Had 1 prolapse and it was on a older crossbreed cow. She had a big calf and it lived but she didn't have difficulty like others have said. In fact she's pregnant again and soon to dry.
Jerseys are more prone to milk fever but the first thing I changed when coming aboard here was changing the feeding order. Feed the closeups after the dry cows not before. The little bit of carryover milk cow ration in the mixer can be just enough to cause milk fever. Since then the milk fevers have gone away. Haven't had one milk fever since November.
