They were made in Kingston, our local small town, in the early years of the last century. They were poured in forms, with some iron added for tensile strength. The top of the pour was flat, of course, and became the side you put the fence against. The rest of the post was U-shaped in cross-section, which aided in getting it out of the form. Where the tapered "U" met the flat side, there was a series of shallow notches that helped hold the fence up.

We farm some ground that had over a mile of these posts. Over time, enough water would get into the post that the iron would rust and pop the concrete. After that, they went downhill fast. But, they did make it about one hundred years. There are still a couple of end posts standing. They're in our way a little, but we're letting them stand for now.
