Floyd County, Iowa | Don't know what you mean by "our farm is small". 50 acres? 500 acres?
I dry mine here. The main advantage is no waiting in line at co-op. I have a small continuous flow dryer, and dump hot into the bins. But I used to have a Shivvers bin. When I went to the cf dryer, it cut my drying time in half or better. Personally I would never have a bin dryer, but that's my opinion. You can find many hours of reading here on bin vs cont flow dryers.
Don't think you will eliminate shrink. You have shrink every time you handle it, no way to get around it. And there's more to the cost of drying than the gas and electricity. You have to also figure in the dryer, the bins, the augers and upkeep/repairs. I figure I can dry and store it for less than in town, but there's still costs. That's why they charge enough for drying- they have upkeep costs that have to come rom somewhere. BUT the number you put up is pretty steep. Here, it amounts to about 4 cents/point/bushel at co-op. | |
