When installing the 12" pipe with a float inside the pipe, install a black rubber cover to cap the 12" pipe. It holds the heat in to keep the float ice free. Also, drill a 1/8" hole somewhere above the water level to let air escape when filling, to allow the water level inside the pipe to be equal to the tank water level.
